Seniors Ezra Calumpit and Emmanuel Scott highlighted Evergreen Valley athletes Saturday at day two of the CCS wrestling championships at Independence High School. Both Calumpit and Scott advanced round five of the consolation bracket, when Calumpit fell in the 162 pound weight class to King City's Eric Ochoa while Scott lost to Phil Park of Gunn at 285 pounds. Jordan Benigno lost in the third round of consolation matches at 112 pounds to Keith Cheung of South San Francisco.

With a total of 21 team points, Evergreen Valley finished in the middle of the pack in 40th place out of 80 squads that participated. The Cougars will not be taking any athletes to the CIF State Championships on March 6-7 in Bakersfield.

Evergreen Valley sent four individuals to the day one of the CCS wrestling championships on Friday at Independence High School:

112 pounds: Senior Jordan Benigno was pinned in the first round of the championships bracket by Jarron Ramirez of Palma and is now 2-1 in the consolation bracket.

160 pounds: BVAL champ Ezra Calumpit lost by a 6-2 decision to King City's Eric Ochoa, but is still alive in the consolation bracket after two victories.

215 pounds: Sophomore Kevin Nguyen lost to Cori Colton of North Monterey County in the first round by a 2-0 decision and fell to Mt. Pleasant's Scott Brasil in the second consolation round.

285 pounds: Heavyweight Emmanuel Scott was pinned in the second round by Luis Barragan of Gilroy, but has won his both of his consolation matches with pins.

Senior Night at the Cougar Den will honor the contributions of seniors Mark Miloto, Jordan Adkins, and Patrick Ngo. EV won a thriller against Del Mar on the road in mid-January.

2/18 Girls Basketball v. Silver Creek (JV 5:30, V 7)

Senior night at the Cougar Den against a hated rival. EV looks to continue cruising through league a secure a league title on its way to CCS.

2/27-2/28 CCS Wrestling Finals at Independence

2/28 Baseball v. Santa Clara (@ Washington Park in Santa Clara) 8 P.M.

The Cougars have high expectations as they look to rebound from a tough year. This years squad is talented and a preseason scheduled chalked full of talented A-league teams will be a major test of character. Sources from other schools have indicated they believe EV has the talent to capture a league title.

Ezra Calumpit came into Satuday's BVAL wrestling championships with high expectations for not only a win, but a high placing at next week's CCS championships. The senior cruised through the early rounds of the 162 pound weight class with a pin of San Jose High's Jose Cazerez in 1:06 and a 11-4 decision against Avinder Sahota of Silver Creek. In the final, Calumpit pulled off a clutch 12-11 victory over Overfelt's Jesus Torres to take the league title.

Senior Emmanuel Scott was in the final at 287 pounds, but was forced to take second place due to an injury default. Other Cougars who qualified for CCS include Jordan Benigno (4th place at 114 lbs) and Kevin Nguyen (6th at 217).

The varsity boys wrestling team went out on top Tuesday on senior night with a 42-28 victory over traditional powerhouses Overfelt Royals. The Cougars were highlighted by the clutch performances of seniors Ryan Pham, whose match came down to the wire with a 9-7 victory, and Ezra Culumpit, whose key escape with three seconds to go earned a 9-8 win at the 171 pound weight class.

Other Evergreen victors included seniors Jordan Benigno (on points), John Ngo (15-2 win), Kevin Le (by foreit), Phu Huynh (by pin), and Emmanual Scott (by foreit) and juniors Pablo Borceguin (by pin) and Alex Elkins (by foreit).

The varsity Cougars are next scheduled to compete at BVAL league finals on February 14 at Pioneer High School and CCS Championships on February 20 and 21 at Independence High School.
